How Managers Can Engage Employees With The Right Language
It is common to not think very much about language, and to fall into a trap of communicating without thinking deeply about it. But language is a tool you can utilise for a range of impacts; you can use language to empower individuals and teams. However, if you aren’t reflective about your use of language, you can end up causing the opposite effect- and make your employees feel disengaged as a result. As we reflect on using language effectively, we consider the positive impact of using the right language for you and your team.
Language is a complex thing, filled with nuances and subtleties. If you acknowledge the complexity of language and are reflective about the language you use, you can begin to understand the enormity of its impact on your interactions with others. In a leadership role, your language is critical, as it helps guide others. The language you use can make all the difference between your business thriving, or falling behind. But why?
In business, it is mostly language that will define your brand identity. What are the phrases that come up again and again in meetings? What are the words that come up in reviews for your business online? Do you have a company ethos or slogan? What language do you use to represent your business? All these words culminate to form your brand identity – these are the words we remember and associate with a business. Starting to pay attention to the words you and others use when speaking about your business will highlight the impact of language on your company culture.
Maybe it seems obvious, but reflecting leadership in your language is extremely important. If you use language that implies you are unsure, it will be more difficult for your employees to feel like they know what to do next. Unsure language will reflect into the business as a whole, making others feel unsure. This can limit productivity and create unnecessary stress.
Using open rather than closed language is a good place to start. When you speak to your employees, you should ensure that you are asking them questions and starting conversations that they can respond to. If you ask questions that have one-word answers it can make it difficult for your employees to truly engage with the business. Be attentive to the types of questions that can help you understand more about their role. By asking open-ended questions, you will be able to empower your team. It will help them to work effectively as a team, rather than as individuals, as they will be able to truly engage in problem-solving together.
Open-ended questions also generate possibilities. A true leader can sit back and listen to others, inviting them to speak and asking questions. For example, if there is a problem, open-ended questions can make it easier to solve the problem, or at least to consider ideas. Harnessing the importance of language and using it to your advantage will be helpful in these situations, which can help your employees to feel heard.
